Prince Harry and Meghan Markle are expecting their first child any day now. And while Baby Sussex will be a British citizen, he or she will have been born to an American mother, which means United States citizenship will be automatic. But with U.S. citizenship comes a need to pay U.S. taxes, and that could mean the royal family will be shelling out a lot of money to America.
Since Baby Sussex will be a U.S. citizen, he or she will have to pay taxes
The U.S. has a unique tax system that most other countries around the world do not have. Any citizen is legally required to pay taxes to the government. This means that, whether they live in the U.S. or not, the government has the right to collect money. The only way to get out of that is to give up citizenship. Although Baby Sussex will be born and raised in Britain, he or she will automatically be a citizen due to Meghan's citizenship. This means that no matter what, the royal family will be paying taxes on the baby.
The IRS will have the right to see notoriously private royal family accounts
The Internal Revenue Service, or IRS, is the service that requires everyone to pay government taxes. The IRS has the right to look into any accounts associated with those paying taxes, which means the U.S. will have access to offshore, private accounts associated with the royal family. The royal family is one of the wealthiest families in the world, and it's easy to see why they wouldn't want their accounts opened up to the U.S. government. But at this point, there isn't much they can do to avoid the baby paying taxes.
The child will be forced to pay U.S. taxes until he or she is 18
Even as Baby Sussex grows up, he or she will be required to pay taxes every year for the first 18 years. After that, the child can choose to give up his or her citizenship, and once that happens, the U.S. won't continue to collect money. Even if Meghan gave up her citizenship after the baby was born, it wouldn't matter; the child is an individual, and regardless of Meghan's citizenship at that point, the baby will still have access to the U.S.
Meghan Markle can't retract her U.S. citizenship since she isn't yet a British citizen
Everyone seems to be wondering why Meghan won't give up her U.S. citizenship before the baby is born. She can't give up her citizenship because she is not yet a British citizen. And at this point, she won't be eligible to become one before Baby Sussex arrives. While the family did understand this was possible when Harry and Meghan began dating, it has proven to be a headache trying to figure everything out. They may not want to give up access to their accounts, but love is love, and it's not Harry's fault he fell for an American.
